Eighteen Trinidad and Tobago nationals and two Grenadian candidates have been selected for the 2025 Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme.
The Embassy of Japan hosted a send-off reception and pre-departure orientation for the participants at the official residence of the Ambassador of Japan, Dr Umezawa Akima, on July 31.
The JET Programme, a cornerstone of Japan’s international exchange initiatives, allows young professionals to work in schools and government offices across Japan, promoting cultural exchange and mutual understanding.
Ambassador Umezawa welcomed the group with warm remarks, highlighting the programme’s focus on cross-cultural learning, skill development, and personal growth through immersive experiences in Japanese society.
He encouraged the participants to serve as cultural ambassadors, both sharing their heritage and embracing Japan’s traditions.
Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training, Senator Prakash Persad, was also in attendance.
He offered congratulations and shared his optimism for the participants’ impact, noting the critical role they will play in deepening the friendly ties between Japan and their home countries.
Participants will serve primarily as Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) in elementary, junior high, and high schools across Japan.
In addition to supporting English language education, they will engage in wider community activities that promote global awareness and foster enduring international relationships.
The JET Programme experience is expected to yield significant personal and professional benefits for the participants, including enhanced teaching and communication skills, improved language proficiency, and a broader intercultural perspective.
Their presence in Japan is also seen as a valuable opportunity to promote Caribbean culture abroad.
The delegation departs for Japan with strong encouragement from both the Japanese and Trinidad and Tobago governments, ready to contribute meaningfully to education and cultural diplomacy.
