21-Year-Old Remanded for Murder of Teen Shot on Iguana Street Extension

Twenty-one-year-old Louis Maxwell Matthews has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison following his arraignment today for the murder of seventeen-year-old Kaylon Trevor David.  Matthews, a handyman of Iguana Street Extension in Belize City, appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court Number Two this afternoon. He was read a single charge of murder. No plea was taken because of the nature of the offence, and his next court appearance was set for December 21. Before the hearing ended, Matthews asked for a summary of the facts of the case against him.  The charge follows the fatal shooting of David last Thursday, October 8. At around six-thirty that evening, David was reportedly walking along Iguana Street Extension when a gunman approached him and fired several shots. He was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he later died.  ACP Hilberto Romero provided an update on the investigation.

ACP Hilberto Romero, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch: “Reference of murder of Kaylon David that occurred in Belize City we have since arrested and charged Lewis Matthews, 21 years of Belize City for the crime of murder. This is after an investigation was conducted and was identified as the shooter.”

Reporter: Have you been able to establish what was the issue between these two individuals ?

ACP Hilberto Romero, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch: “Again they have a rivalry in that area.”

Police formally charged Matthews on Saturday, October 10. Investigators previously indicated that the shooting may have stemmed from a rivalry involving threats exchanged between David and other individuals in the area. He remains in custody pending his December court appearance.
