A 33-year-old Tableland man lost his life at Mayaro Beach on Saturday, turning what was meant to be a joyful weekend reunion into a scene of heartbreak for a group of families.

Robin Swah, 33, had been enjoying the water with family members at a rented beach house along Grand Lagoon, Guayaguayare Road, when tragedy struck. According to police, Swah got into difficulty while bathing and disappeared beneath the waves.

Family members rushed to his aid but were unable to save him as the high tide and strong currents proved too powerful. He never resurfaced.

Authorities were alerted immediately. Mayaro Police contacted the TT Coast Guard, whose divers joined efforts alongside local fishermen. Captain Shamsudeen Auyebe and his Hunters’ Search and Rescue team, together with family members, scoured the beach in a desperate bid to locate Swah, but their efforts through the night proved unsuccessful.

The search continued yesterday with a combined team of TT Coast Guard divers, Hunters’ Search and Rescue, the Air Guard Support Unit, local fishermen, and volunteer divers.

His body was eventually found in the afternoon floating in the waters near a hotel in Mayaro.

Police are urging anyone visiting beaches—especially families and children—to exercise extreme caution. They advise using safety gear, avoiding the water during high tide, and steering clear of choppy conditions, particularly when no lifeguards are present.
