5 Questions With Levy’s Heritage

2 weeks ago 7

It is not often that a group that has been in the business for two decades comprises members who barely look as if they are in their twenties. That’s true of siblings Oshin, Ovando, and Oneil, the children of gospel heavyweight Lubert Levy and his wife Sharon, who go by the name Levy’s Heritage. The trio, which has made an indelible mark in the gospel arena, winning numerous awards along the way, has been singing since they were children on stage with their father. This year, Levy’s Heritage is celebrating an inspiring 20 years as a group. A big gospel event, which included a concert and album launch, was originally set for this weekend, but the passage of Hurricane Melissa has necessitated a change of date. Reacting to the storm, the Levy’s Heritage team sent out a message of hope and compassion, noting that “in light of the storm’s impact, we have made the decision to reschedule the event originally set for November 1. We appreciate your understanding and partnership as we ensure a safe and meaningful experience for all.”

This week, 5 Questions With ... had a chat with Levy’s Heritage.

1. Levy’s Heritage is celebrating 20 years. How and why was the group formed, and did you expect to be around two decades later?

Levy’s Heritage was formed in 2005 by our father, Lubert Levy, who saw that we’d be more impactful together. At the time, Oshin was a soloist, and the men were a duo called the Levy Brothers. Our impact was cemented when we entered our first competition as a group (Maja Awards) and won the award for junior gospel stars.

2. As the children of Lubert Levy, was it expected that you would follow your father’s footsteps, and how does he feel when he watches Levy’s Heritage perform on stage?

While our dad brought us to many events and encouraged us to sing as a way of expressing our love to God, he actually didn’t try to influence us to walk the same path. He would always share with us that it’s a challenging space, but we loved singing together and wanted to do so at a global level, so we persevered. We can truly say that he is a proud father. He’s always supporting our music and shows, even as he continues to minister. And we also want to acknowledge our mom, Sharon, who we call our super fan.

3. How many albums has the group released so far, and is there any new album in the making?

We have released two albums: our début album, One Touch, in 2013 and Summoned: Submitting to the Call in 2019. We’ll be releasing our third studio album, titled The Triad this year.

4. What are some of the challenges that you face as gospel artistes, and how do you overcome them?

First, we must say that the journey has been quite rewarding, thanks to God, our supporters, the media, and event promoters. However, when doing gospel music, there are limitations with sponsorship when hosting events and actually getting our music played outside of our all-gospel stations/platforms. Then there is the whole challenge of preference as folks may gravitate to solo acts more than groups. We, however, believe that we have made several strides in the industry and really give God all the glory for where He has brought us. Our consistency and strength from God has really helped us to overcome.

5. What are some of the awards that Levy’s Heritage has won over the years and plans for Champions Festival?

We are the 2012 JCDC Gospel Festival Winners and four-time Sterling Gospel Award winners. We’ve also been nominated [for] international awards such as JIMA (Jamaica International Music Award) and Marlin Gospel Awards, among others. We had to change the date for [the] Champion Festival and Anniversary Celebration from November 1 because of the impacts of Hurricane Melissa. However, we will be announcing the new date on our event Instagram page @lh_championfestandanniversary. Patrons can expect an evening of praise and celebration as we celebrate 20 years of ministry and the launch of The Triad.

What would fans be surprised to know about Levy’s Heritage?

We are from a family of powerful singers. On the Champion Festival and Anniversary Celebration event, patrons can actually expect ministry from five of our relatives, namely Kevin Downswell, Sista Patt, Lubert Levy, Shushana Levy, and Miriam Levy.
