5 Questions With Nigy Boy

2 months ago 22

On his journey to stardom, Nigy Boy has carved out his sound with standout tracks like Continent, Judgement, and Dangerous. His visual impairment isn’t just part of his story—it’s part of what fuels his soulful voice, which continues to defy limitations. So far, he’s collaborated with dancehall names like Chronic Law, Skillibeng, and Moyann. Refusing to be boxed into any one genre, Nigy Boy is making waves with his groovy track Hold On, featuring Trinidadian soca singer Nailah Blackman, and has followed that up with Ready Up, a collab with Vincentian artiste Skinny Fabulous, just in time for the local road march. In recognition of the highly anticipated ‘whining’ season, this week’s 5 Questions With... got up close and personal with Nigy Boy.

1. What inspired you to explore soca music?

I want to dabble in as many genres of music as possible, and tap into as many markets as I can. Soca is that ‘feel-good’ type of music that really resonates with me, especially when I’m out partying. When you’re at certain events and soca comes on, you just want to move your body. I can’t dance, but I’ll still bounce.

2. How did these collaborations come to life? And, what was the production process like for the song?

Funny enough, both collaborations kind of just happened; I’m surprised to this day. Legendary soca producer, Johnny Blaze, was interested in doing some work with me. And I was happy for the opportunity. He sent me his projects and I did the work with him. But then, I told him I had a soca song in the vault. I had recorded that track back in 2023. He asked to hear it, I sent it to him and he said it was a beautiful song, and he had just the person for this collaboration. All of a sudden, I heard Nailah Blackman’s voice on the song and all I could think was, ‘This is amazing!’ The same thing happened with Skinny Fabulous. I wrote the entire song and I got a call from Johnny Blaze who said once again, he has someone in mind. In no time, Skinny Fabulous entered the track.

3. How did you feel about collaborating with soca hit makers like Nailah Blackman and Skinny Fabulous?

It was exciting enough to be doing soca. But to secure a collaboration with a soca princess? Surreal. Nailah Blackman is soca royalty. The track has been making waves. I had a show in San Diego, California and the crowd began singing the song word for word. That was a shock to me. Also, I’m honoured for this collaboration with Skinny Fabulous because he is such a giant in soca. All works of the Lord.

4. Is there any other soca artiste you would like to work with?

Of course! I would love to work with Machel Montano, Kes the Band, Bunji Garlin, Yung Bredda, Lyrical, Mr Killa and Voice. And, if Alison Hinds would like to say good morning tomorrow, that’s perfectly fine too. That’s a soca queen right there. And, if Destra and Patrice Roberts are ready, so am I. Bring on the whole soca kingdom. Soca deserves to be celebrated.

5. What are your top-five songs on your soca playlist?

That’s very difficult. Let’s start off with Hello by Kes The Band. I also love his song, Cocoa Tea. I definitely love Rolly Polly by Mr Killa, and his track, Run Wid It, which features Stadic. And the last song, Alison Hinds’ Togetherness ... that song will never die.

BRAWTA

How do you relax and unwind after a long day?

More while, I just sleep. Sometimes, I turn on a movie or show to watch on Netflix and Netflix ends up watching me.
