54 Belize City Council Enforcement Officers Sworn in as Special Constables

The Belize City Council has formally sworn 54 of its Enforcement Officers as Special Constables. The swearing-in ceremony was held this afternoon at the House of Culture, where the officers took their oath of office and were formally recognized. As Special Constables, the officers will work in support of law enforcement while carrying out their duties with the Belize City Council. Their responsibilities include areas such as traffic management, dealing with traffic violations, assisting with summonses, market enforcement, liquor license checks and other matters involving Council regulations. The move is intended to strengthen the Council’s ability to deal with violations and maintain order in areas under its responsibility. Commissioner of Police Dr. Anthony Richard Rosado addressed the officers during the ceremony, highlighting the importance of their new responsibilities.

Dr. Anthony Richard Rosado, Commissioner of Police: “As a department, we thought it was important for us to develop the capacity of traffic wardens across the country including our transport officer in order for them to develop the capacity to enforce the traffic regulation. As special constables they now how to have the power of arrest. With that power of arrest they have great responsibility. Hence the reason I found it necessary to caution them today when I did my remarks. I think they will help us significantly in enforcing the traffic regulation while we on our crime prevention effort. We want to partner with all traffic wardens, with all municipalities, with the transport department because we believe if we develop their capacity we’ll be able to focus on our mandate as police officers.”

Enforcement Officer Denisha Banks spoke about the training the officers received and how it prepared them for their new responsibilities.

Denisha Banks, Enforcement Officer: “This training has been an important journey. One that has equipped us with valuable knowledge, practical skills, and most importantly a deeper understanding of responsibility that comes with serving our city. We learned that being a special constable is not only about enforcing the law but doing so lawfully, fairly, professionally and with respect for the rights of others. Our training taught us the importance of accurate reports, proper evidence handling and bring prepared to explain our actions in court. Thanks to our municipal court manager Mr. Jermaine Hyde and Magistrate Margaret McKenzie.”

For the officers, being sworn in as Special Constables comes with added responsibility. They will interact directly with residents, business owners and other members of the public as they carry out their duties.
