643 Athletes Enter YMCA/Burger King Prep & Primary Swim Meet

Six hundred and forty-three swimmers from 39 schools are entered to compete in the YMCA/Burger King Prep and Primary Schools swim meet at the Stadium pool, on Friday.

Schools from across the island will be competing for the Sarah Newland-Martin Championship Trophy, named in honour of the late general secretary of the Kingston YMCA.

Newland-Martin was the driving force behind transforming the competition from a small local event into one of the largest 12-and-under competitions in the Caribbean.

The defending overall champion is Hillel Prep, while the defending primary school champion is Excelsior.

The YMCA/Burger King swim meet has provided the foundation for outstanding Jamaican swimmers who have gone on to represent the country at major global competitions, including the world championships and the Olympics.

They include, Nathaniel Hunter, Zaneta Alvaranga, Sabrina Lyn, Emily McDonald, Timothy Wynter, Nelson Denny and Leanna Wainwright.
