77-Year-Old Woman Killed in Belize City Traffic Accident, Police Share Investigation Update

Police are also investigating a separate fatal traffic accident in Belize City that claimed the life of a seventy-seven-year-old woman.  Police say their investigation into Thursday’s fatal traffic accident on the Philip Goldson Highway remains ongoing. Seventy-seven-year-old Erlene Elizabeth Gillett of Burrell Boom was killed after she was struck by a vehicle in front of Enrique Martinez and Sons Limited in Belize City.  The accident was reported shortly before eleven-thirty yesterday morning. Assistant Commissioner of Police Stacy Smith shared the findings of the investigation so far and outlined the action taken by investigators.

ASP Stacy Smith, Belize Police Department: “Police have served a notice of intended prosecution on a male person in connection with the ongoing investigation into a fatal road traffic accident which resulted in the death of 77-year-old Erlene Gillett, a Belizean retiree of Burrell Boom. The traffic accident occurred just before 11:30am on 27 August 2026 in the vicinity of mile 2 on the Philip Goldson Highway. What the investigation has shown so far is that Gillette was struck by a Dodge Caravan which was being driven by the stated male person as she was attempting to cross the highway. The motor vehicle has since been impounded as a part of the ongoing investigation and a urine sample has been obtained from the driver. If memory serves well, I believe this is the second of such incident in recent times when a pedestrian was truck seeking to cross the highway. So certainly it would be to urge persons to use the designated crossing path in that area but also there’s an onus on drivers, you know, it’s still within city limits and though the area was not a designated crossing area persons onboard motor vehicles have a duty to pay attention and be on the alert as they’re operating these motor vehicles.”

Police say their initial investigation indicates that fifty-eight-year-old Gregory Nicholas was driving a gold Dodge Caravan toward Belize City when Gillett attempted to cross the highway. Investigators believe she ran from the median into the vehicle’s path and was struck. The impact damaged the right side of the van’s windshield and hood.  Gillett sustained injuries to her head and body and was pronounced dead. Her body was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and later transferred to the morgue for a post-mortem examination.  Nicholas was taken to the hospital where a blood specimen was obtained. He was also served with notice of intended prosecution.
