- File photoNINE Venezuelan nationals, comprising seven females and two males, have been charged with the offence of illegal entry.
Five of them were each fined $1,000, with 60 days allowed for payment. In default, they will serve seven days’ simple imprisonment.
The remaining four were placed on a bond to keep the peace and be of good behaviour for the next six months.
They appeared on October 15 before Master Debra Quintyne at the Port of Spain Charge Case Court, where all pleaded guilty to entering the country on an unknown date and at a location that is not a legal port of entry and failing to report to immigration officials as is required by law.
The group was arrested during a co-ordinated operation carried out by members of the Immigration Investigation North Unit between 9 am on October 14 and 3 pm on October 15.
The initiative was co-ordinated by Snr Supt Maraj, Supt Pariman, Insp Phillip and Sgt Katherson, and led by W/Cpl Parks.
The exercise formed part of ongoing efforts by the Immigration Division and the police’s Immigration Investigations Unit of the CID/Criminal Records Office to ensure compliance with immigration laws.
