With today being celebrated as Read Across Jamaica Day, author Jenelle Alexia is making the George Headley Primary School in Duhaney Park one of the stops on her A’Legends School Tour, which kicked off on Monday.

She is introducing her second children’s book Keira and Jaime Discover a Musical Dream.

Alexia, who is also an actress and producer, is aiming to make reading fun again with her books which target children at the primary school level.

“The goal is to normalise reading and make it fun at the same time. This ‘dunce’ culture in dancehall now is like taking several steps back and, unfortunately, leading the future of our amazing country in the wrong direction,” Alexia continues.

The A’Legends School Tour will visit schools in Old Harbour, Spanish Town, Kingston and St Andrew. Dancehall artistes Xoshaniel, Vershon and Black-er will make special appearances at various schools, as well as popular dancer Shankle Dip and others.

“This tour would not be possible without the generous support of various colleagues, known and unknown, who appreciate this cause,” shared Alexia.

She has already done readings at various schools in New Jersey and has others planned upon return to the States. Next on her agenda is getting both books into curriculum not only in the US but also in Jamaica, Guyana and throughout the Caribbean.

Talks have already begun with the Ministry of Education and she is receiving major support from the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport.

The theme for the day is ‘Safeguarding the Future of Education: Adapting to the Changing Landscape’.
