Assistance has been pouring into the island from all corners of the world post-Hurricane Melissa, and Ghana is no exception. Citizens of the west African country have been gathering relief supplies to send to the land of wood and water, and this initiative is being spearheaded by Jamaican actor, Kevoy Burton.
“When I saw the devastation that Hurricane Melissa had on my homeland, I felt so helpless being so far away. Everything on social media has been heart-breaking. As a proud born-and-bred Jamaican, I had to help, so I rallied the troops,” Burton told The Gleaner.
The actor, who is known for his roles in films such as Ghett’A Life, Destiny and Joseph, migrated to Ghana a few years ago and he is currently the president of the Ghana-Caribbean Association. He decided to take action by hosting a relief supply drive geared towards receiving tangible and monetary donations that will go directly to the place he calls home.
Essential items that are being requested for the Jamaica Relief Support Drive include toiletries, non-perishable food items, medical supplies, clothes, construction tools and school supplies. Courtesy of the Member of Parliament for South West St Andrew, Dr Angela Brown-Burke, Burton was able to partner with Hanover Charities and the Jamaica Sunshine Foundation to make this mission an inspiring reality.
“There are a lot of people here who love Jamaica and its culture. We’re organising our relief efforts at the Alpha Beta School. It’s one of the best schools here. It was started 37 years ago by a Jamaican,” he revealed.
He added, “When the school heard that we wanted to make a donation, the principal called me and offered me their campus to use at no charge; just come in, set up and do what is needed in order to collect.”
The school has even asked for a one-week extension so that parents could bring in items to donate. Other drop-off locations include Ting Nice Jamaican Restaurant, Jerk Harbour Ghana, Ahoto Guest House and Jam Rock Restaurant and Grill. The aim is to send off everything by this week.
“Every mickle mek a muckle, so it doesn’t matter how small. I just want to assist. I don’t even know what to say to those who are affected by Hurricane Melissa because, again, I see the devastation. It’s going to take some time to recover and rebuild. But we’re a resilient set of people,” Burton declared.
