Ambassador Nestor Mendez Highlights Belize Diaspora Ties During Miramar Visit

Love News continues its coverage of the various activities held in Miramar, Florida, through the city’s sister-city relationship with Belize. Belize’s Ambassador to the United States, Nestor Mendez, was among the guests invited to a meet-and-greet on Saturday, where he had an opportunity to observe several events taking place simultaneously.  The activities ranged from a STEM Logo Challenge, aimed at engaging young minds in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, to a fundraising initiative in support of Stella Maris School in Belize. The events formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen ties between Belizeans at home and members of the diaspora in South Florida.  Ambassador Mendez spoke with us about his impressions of the activities and the importance of initiatives that bring together education, community involvement and support for Belizean institutions.

The weekend also provided another opportunity for Belizeans living abroad to reconnect with their culture and national identity. Ambassador Mendez reflected on the strong sense of community among Belizeans in South Florida, particularly during events such as Belize Day, which was celebrated in Miramar on July 11. He says these gatherings demonstrate that, despite living outside the country, Belizeans continue to proudly display their patriotism and love for Belize.

Belize City Council and the City of Miramar signed sister city relations on August 21, 2024.
