AMCHAM T&T concerned over potential US visa bond requirement

The American Chamber of Commerce, AMCHAM T&T, has said it notes with concern the recent reports regarding the potential requirement by the US State Department for certain visa applicants to post bonds of up to US$15,000 to enter the United States.

“We firmly believe that such a policy should not apply to citizens of Trinidad and Tobago, who have consistently demonstrated compliance with US visa conditions,” AMCHAM T&T said in a statement.

The statement points out that, according to the US Department of Homeland Security’s FY2023 Entry/Exit Overstay Report (Appendix C), Trinidad and Tobago’s overstay rate remains one of the lowest in the region, at just 2.43 per cent.

AMCHAM T&T says this is a clear indication that T&T citizens respect US immigration rules.

“This is one of the lowest overstay rates in the world and in the Americas. At a time when both our nations are seeking to deepen commercial ties, encourage legitimate tourism, and promote trade and investment, we urge that any new visa policies reflect the strong bilateral relationship we share, and the track record of compliance shown by our citizens,” the statement said.

AMCHAM T&T said it remains committed to working with stakeholders to promote transparent, secure, and mutually beneficial travel and business exchanges between Trinidad and Tobago and the United States.
