AMCHAM urges collaboration following Nutrien shutdown

The American Chamber of Commerce of Trinidad and Tobago (AMCHAM T&T) has acknowledged Nutrien Ltd.’s announcement of a controlled shutdown of its nitrogen operations at the Point Lisas facility, effective October 23, 2025.

AMCHAM T&T said the decision highlights the need for continued collaboration among stakeholders to ensure a stable and competitive investment environment. It noted that issues related to port access and the supply of reliable, economically viable natural gas must be addressed through constructive dialogue and coordinated action.

The organisation said recent increases in gas production through public-private collaboration, and announcements of potential upstream activity, were encouraging signs. It expressed confidence that all parties would work toward a resolution that supports business sustainability and investor confidence, adding that Trinidad and Tobago remains a market with significant investment potential.

Minister of Energy and Energy Industries Dr Roodal Moonilal confirmed that discussions are ongoing between Nutrien and the National Energy Corporation on contractual arrangements related to port use and other operational matters. He said the Government is working to regularize agreements that were not concluded under the previous administration.

Former Minister of Energy and Energy Industries Stuart Young, in a Facebook statement, raised concerns about the state of the energy sector. He linked recent board changes at the National Gas Company and National Energy Corporation to what he described as a developing crisis at Point Lisas.

Nutrien’s planned shutdown has prompted renewed discussion on the sector’s stability and investor confidence.
