It is too soon to determine whether the installation of a new US military radar system at ANR Robinson Airport will play a significant role in the upcoming Tobago House of Assembly (THA) elections.

Political analyst Dr Shane Mohammed said that without an announced election date, it is premature to assess whether the radar situation will influence the campaign.

“I think it’s too early right now to see whether there’s going to be an impact. First, we need to know when the election will be, and how that election date fits into the calendar of events in the weeks to come. Then we can have another discussion,” Dr Mohammed said.

He added that the situation has highlighted the need for improved government communication.

“Communication is very important. Government communication needs improvement. This isn’t just about speaking publicly—it’s about online communication as well. There’s a lot of rhetoric and sensationalisation,” he said.

Dr Mohammed also noted that he was uncertain whether the radar issue is currently a major concern for most Tobagonians.

Attempts by Guardian Media to gather comments from other political analysts were unsuccessful, with several declining to speak, citing the situation as too speculative at this stage.

THA Chief Secretary Farley Augustine dissolved the assembly two weeks ago but has promised to announce the election date by today.

Augustine, political leader of the Tobago People’s Party, is confident of retaking the THA but will face a challenge from the People’s National Movement, led by former Chief Secretary Ancil Dennis.
