Analysts Concerned Jamaica Could Be Impacted by Trump’s Trade War

Financial analyst, Dennis Chung, says Jamaica could suffer from a fall out in tourism earnings as a result of the trade war involving the US, Mexico, Canada and China.

Chung says consumers in countries like the US will have less disposable income to pay for leisure services such as tourism as the pending tariffs will lead to a rise in prices in their economies.

Canada and Mexico are set to impose retaliatory tariffs after the US imposes 25 per cent import taxes on goods from the two countries, as well as a ten percent tax on China. China says it will implement corresponding countermeasures.

The tariffs, which were announced by US President Donald Trump will come into effect from midnight on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, development economist, Dr Christopher Stokes, says Jamaica may have to spend more foreign exchange to purchase goods from abroad.

He also believes the trade war could affect inflation in Jamaica.
