Anglican’s Bishop Wright elected as the Church’s Archbishop in the West Indies Province

History was made as The Right Reverend Philip S. Wright, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Belize, was elected Archbishop of the Church in the Province of the West Indies during the Provincial Synod held earlier today. His election marks a proud and historic moment for both Belize and the wider Caribbean Anglican community, as he becomes only the second Belizean bishop, formerly from British Honduras, to hold this esteemed office. The last was the Right Reverend Edward Arthur Dunn, who served as Archbishop from 1936 to 1943.  Extending congratulations on this achievement was Opposition Senator Patrick Faber.

Hon. Patrick Faber, United Democratic Party: “I think Belizeans should know that Bishop Philip becomes the first Belizean born to ascend to this position. Belize once had, well not Belize but British Honduras once had its bishop, one of Bishop Philip’s predecessors the Most Reverend Edward Arthur Dunn who was Archbishop back in the ’30’s to the ’40’s I think but of course, Archbishop Dunn was not a born Belizean. So we feel that it is a tremendously big deal that our very own Bishop Philip is elevated to this position and we ask the nation’s prayers and I join with my Senate colleagues to offer the Anglican Diocese of Belize its congratulations. And of course we give our prayers and our best wishes to the Most Reverend Philip Wright Metropolitan and Primate of the Church in the Province of the West Indies.”

Bishop Wright, who has served as Bishop of Belize since November 2005, is widely respected for his steady leadership, deep faith, and commitment to pastoral care. Over the past two decades, he has represented Belize with distinction at regional and international gatherings of the Anglican Communion, fostering dialogue, unity, and cooperation across the Church./
