Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) president Keith Wellington has declared the 2024 schoolboy football competitions as yet another successful season in their books despite the many challenges faced.

Speaking yesterday at the ISSA/SBF Awards ceremony at Summit Kingston, Wellington congratulated the 122 schools that competed across the Manning and daCosta Cup competitions.

“I must congratulate all the teams that participated this season, all 37 Manning Cup and all 85 daCosta Cup, that participated because everyone of these teams are winners. Your participation, the schools providing the opportunity to participate was a winning move,” the association’s president stated.

Wellington took the time to praise the competition’s organising body, as well as the various schools, for their work in ensuring the schoolboy football season went according to plan.

He explained that the organisers had much on their plate due to the poor weather conditions that plagued much of the season.

“I must say we are very pleased with how the competition was organised. There were a number of challenges headed by the situation with the weather. I think 2024 was probably the year when we encountered the most challenges where the weather was concerned,” he explained.

“For weeks we had rain every day for hours upon hours. I must commend all the schools for their diligence in ensuring the games were played and in particular, our chairmen and competition’s officer.”

Wellington also took the time to acknowledge several of the competitions’ sponsors as he explained their contractual agreements with ISSA have now come to an end.

He said while several of their key sponsors will return for the upcoming seasons, he is inviting corporate Jamaica to partner with the association for the years to come.

“I want to say thank to the sponsors and not just on behalf of the ISSA executives, but on the behalf of all of our schools, all of our young players as well as all of us who look forward each year to watch schoolboy football,” he stated.

“This year marks the end of the contractual period for all our sponsors. Some will be returning and some may not return, so we are throwing it out publicly that ISSA schoolboy football will be available for sponsorship.”

The postseason awards ceremony was used to highlight several of the competition’s top performers throughout the season.

Kvist Paul of Kingston College (KC) and Omarion O’Brian of Garvey Maceo took home the Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards for the Manning and daCosta Cup respectively.

National youth representative Orane Watson of Glenmuir High took home the daCosta Cup leading goalscorer and Golden Boot (from second round) awards while Excelsior’s Kimarley Scott took home the Manning Cup’s equivalent.

Glenmuir and Jamaica College won the most attacking team awards for the daCosta Cup and Manning Cup competitions respectively while Kemps Hill and Campion College were named the season’s best defensive teams for their respective competitions.
