Arnett look for immediate impact

Arnett Gardens Football Club, while heartened by their first win in four Jamaica Premier League (JPL) games, are still looking to the transfer window with a view to attracting players who can provide them with immediate impact.

On Monday, Arnett beat Cavalier, but that victory came off the back of back-to-back losses to Montego Bay United and Molynes United, as well as a 1-1 draw with Racing United.

With the transfer window open, Arnett are expected to make a number of signings to help bolster the team’s roster and steady their season.

Assistant coach, Decoy Williams, while declining to speak on specific transfer targets, said they are only eyeing players they feel can have an immediate impact at the club.

“We’re looking at players who can come and help the team right away,” the assistant coach insisted.

“Arnett is a big club and when we’re struggling, we have to look at players to come in. Hopefully the players who come in can play their part and pick up on what we have going on.”

Still, Williams believes Arnett are set to do well this season.

Arnett haven’t just had a poor run since the resumption of the JPL after its Hurricane Melissa-sized break, but endured rough going before it, picking up just 12 points in their first 10 games, registering six defeats along the way.

Williams insisted that poor run of form is behind them as he is confident they can put together a strong run of performances in the second round.

“Two games, four points,” Williams said. “I think that is good enough to start the second round. It’s just climbing from here and we’re just catching our footing. I believe in the team, I believe in the boys and I think we’ll get the job done this season.

“It’s football. You have teams that go on runs and hopefully this is our run and this is our form. I said what happened last year, leave it behind, and focus on this year and so far, it has been going good.”

He continued, “We have a momentum. We’re not looking for players to come and sit on the bench”

Williams also believes the club will need the support of its fans, and made an impassioned call for more fans, particularly at home games.

“It’s a new year and we have started a new beginning,” Williams said.

“I hope every Sunday or Monday night, whenever we have our games, they can come out and support the team and just believe in the team. It’s a young team, they’re learning and still growing but we need the fan support, we need the stadium to be filled.”

Arnett’s next outing will see them hosting Harbour View at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex on Sunday.

The Junglists currently sit eighth in the league’s standing with 16 points, level with Waterhouse and Molynes United, who sit ninth and 10th on goal difference.

Harbour View sit 12th on 14 points, just two points above the relegation zone.

But Williams is choosing to focus on the possibilities.

“This year, we’re promising you guys that we’re going to bring home the trophy.”
