ARNETT GARDENS moved back into second place in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) following a dominant 4-0 display over Molynes United at the Waterhouse Stadium yesterday.
Goals from Fabian Reid (second minute), Kimani Arbouine (39th), Rushane Thompson (75th) and Rushike Kelson (87th) pushed the ‘Junglists’ to 65 points, one ahead of Montego Bay United in third and three behind leaders Mount Pleasant.
Arnett coach Xavier Gilbert praised the efforts of his players, but thought they could have exercised more control over the game.
“It was a big win but not sure the performance was as big as the win. Nevertheless, we got three points and scored some goals, which is good.
“I don’t think we managed the game as best as we could. We wanted to keep possession and move the ball around but we were playing a little bit too fast, especially in the first half.
“After we took the lead, we should have exercised a lot more control. Nevertheless, we did enough to shut them out,” he said.
The game was just two minutes old when Reid latched on to a loose ball on top of the area and lobbed the advancing Darren Donaie to put Arnett in front.
The Junglists continued to dominate and had good chances through Reid, Kimani Arbouine, and Jermy Nelson.
They eventually added a second but it was all due to an enormous error from goalkeeper Donaie, who watched haplessly as Arbouine’s long-range effort slipped from his grasp and rolled through his legs and over the line in the 39th minute.
Molynes came out with real purpose after the break and Rashawn Livingston had a chance but fired over.
Thompson then had a great chance for Arnett but lifted over from six yards.
Immediately after Tyrique Wilson broke loose, with only goalkeeper Roje Williams to beat, but he elected to pass to Peter McGregor who was in an offside position.
Moments later McGregor found himself with a lot of time and space in the box but could not keep his shot on target.
However, Arnett soon regained control and Kelson and Joel Jones missed two great opportunities to increase their lead.
McGregor then missed another great chance for Molynes, lifting over while under pressure from goalkeeper Williams and Jones.
Nevertheless, Arnett would make it 3-0 in the 75th minute when Thompson fired home from the edge of the area after a swift counter.
Giovanni Taylor could have added a fourth four minutes from time but he headed over. Still Kelson would add a fourth, when he drove past his marker and fired into the corner in the 87th munute.
Gilbert added that holding on to second is their primary objective from hereon.
“That’s our objective from the get-go. Finish in the top two. We have to ensure that we pick up as much maximum points as we can heading down the stretch.
“There are not going to be any easy games. Every single game is like a final. It’s how we manage ourselves in every single game,” he stated.
Molynes coach Jermaine Thomas said it was just a bad day all around for his team.
“We conceded early, and two soft goals. And at this level, if you are making those mistakes you are definitely going to pay, especially playing against one of the better teams in the league,” he said.
Molynes are 12th in the table on 28 points, three more than second-from-bottom Humble Lion, who they play next, and five ahead of bottom-place Vere.
