Attempted robbery ends in the killing of a delivery truck driver

A shooting incident just before five o’clock this evening in Belmopan has resulted in the death of one man.  The incident occurred in front of Sunny City Supermarket, next to the Immigration offices, where preliminary information indicates that an attempted robbery was carried out against a Caribbean Chicken truck. During the incident, the driver of the truck, Mark Anthony Gabourel, was reportedly shot in the head.  Gabourel was rushed to the Western Regional Hospital for medical treatment. However, Love News has since confirmed that he died shortly after arriving at the hospital.  Love News correspondent LJay Wade was on the scene shortly after the shooting and filed a live report. Wade reported that access to the area was limited, as police had cordoned off the location and were actively processing the scene at the time.

Ljay Wade, Belmopan Correspondent: “This Caribbean chicken delivery truck that you’re seeing here on the screen was targeted and persons were trying to rob this truck. What one person on the ground told me is that this truck was coming down from the Alwyns Supermarket area and the truck was being chased by two persons on a motorcycle. When the truck arrived in this area in front of the Sunny City supermarket the persons on the motorcycle started to open fire on the truck trying to rob the truck and of course trying to steal whatever it is that they would want to steal what is in the truck, be it money or be some of the products that they were delivering. The driver apparently locked himself inside the truck and the robbers were not able to get in. So what the robbers did, they shot the window. I’m not sure if I can zoom in as police are still canvassing the scene. You can see the window is broken there and you can see some of the glass on the ground but the window was broken from the gunshot by the robbers and that injured the driver. Now in this time, persons were watching in the area and they called the police so the police started to make their way here and the robbers managed to make good their escape. They’re still in the wind but the driver of the truck had to be transported to the Western Regional Hospital as he received injuries. I am not sure of the extent of the injuries that the driver received. I’m not sure if they’re life threatening but one person on the ground did tell me that when they saw the driver, he was not moving. They had to physically pull him out of the truck and place him in the ambulance. As many as four shots were heard as well in the area, according to one of the persons on the ground whom I spoke with. So that’s just been the report the shooting that took place here in Belmopan.” 

Love News understands that the money was still in the truck as the driver had locked himself in the truck which led to the robbers shooting the driver’s side window, hitting Gabourel in the head.  Police have not yet issued an official report on the shooting, and no information has been released regarding suspects.
