Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the death of a full-term baby boy shortly after his birth on Saturday afternoon, as the child’s mother claims she was unaware that she was pregnant.
According to reports the woman and a friend were at the Centre of Excellence, at around 1 pm on Saturday when she described experiencing a sharp pain around her waist and went to bathroom.
The woman later reported feeling a “flushing” out of her body but did not realise she was going into childbirth until security guards at the facility came to her assistance and told her what was happening.
The woman’s mother visited the centre and took her to the Mt Hope Women’s Hospital where they arrived with a full-term baby boy at around 3 pm.
The baby was examined by staff at the NICU ward found that the child was unesponsive and later declared dead.
Medical staff further reported that the baby’s umbilical cord was found around his neck.
The child weiged approximately 31oo grams.
Arouca police were called in and spoke with the woman who said she did not know she was pregnant and explained that she previously had gaps in her menstrual cycle.
The baby’s body was taken to the Hospital Mortuary pending an autopsy.
