St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) claimed their sixth hold on the ISSA daCosta Cup title after an exciting 8-7 penalty shootout victory over Glenmuir at the National Stadium yesterday.
This, after both teams played out a 0-0 draw through 90 minutes. In fact, STETHS played the majority of the second half with 10 men after Kenoy Banton was red-carded in the 55th minute.
The match began at frantic pace with Glenmuir dominating the early possession. The Andrew Peart-coached Glenmuir created a number of chances in the opening 15 minutes but faulty shooting let them down.
However, as the first period progressed, STETHS grew into game as they were a lot more composed and confident on the ball.
The chances began coming for STETHS with Jade Lynch’s shot from 15 yards well saved by Glenmuir’s custodian Jahleel Boothe in the 25th minute.
Banton thought he had given STETHS the lead in the 40th but after receiving a splitting through pass out of the midfield and with goalkeeper Jahleel Boothe at his mercy, he shot wide of the target.
A few minutes later, Lynch’s teammate Deandre Barnett also came close to scoring but his shot from 20 yards went wide of the target.
STETHS suffered a massive blow 10 minutes into the second half as they were reduced to 10 men after Banton received a straight red for a violent tackle on a Glenmuir player.
Glenmuir tried desperately to make the advantage count as they pressed for the opening goal in the game.
They rained shots at STETHS goal but finding the target proved illusive.
Glenmuir’s Orane Watson, who had been ably marked all game Malachi McMaster, was finally slipped through in the 84th minute but went a little too wide, allowing STETHS goalkeeper Johnoi Steadman to save a less-than-forceful effort.
Despite being a man down, STETHS fought gallantly for almost the entire second half, the Santa Cruz-based institution fought gallantly, almost sealing the victory in stoppage time as Kaieem Lewis shot from close range was tipped over the crossbar.
