Barbadian Gale and Bolton end seven-year Championship exile

LONDON, England – Bolton Wanderers are back in the Championship. And at the heart of their long-awaited promotion triumph was the pride and joy of Barbados, attacking midfielder Thierry Gale.

The 24-year-old put in a workmanlike shift for 72 minutes in Sunday’s League One play-off final, as Wanderers cruised past Stockport County 4-1 to secure a return to the second tier for the first time since 2019.

While the scoreline suggests a rout, Gale’s influence in the final third was a constant thorn in Stockport’s side.

The Barbados international registered two shots on the day, one of which forced a sharp save from County goalkeeper Corey Addai.

His movement and industry helped stretch a tiring Stockport defence before he was withdrawn with 18 minutes remaining to a standing ovation from the Bolton end.

The final itself was a rollercoaster. Bolton struck inside five minutes when Addai’s error allowed Ruben Rodrigues to slot home.

Stockport thought they had levelled immediately, but a VAR check ruled out Adama Sidibeh’s effort for a foul on George Johnston. Sidibeh did get his goal just before the half-hour mark, flicking in a header to make it 1-1.

But Bolton took control after the break. Kyle Wootton turned into his own net to restore the lead, and Sam Dalby’s spectacular scissor kick made it 3-1.

Rodrigues added a fourth from the penalty spot in stoppage time after Stockport’s Josh Dacres-Cogley was sent off for a bizarre hair-pull on Ibrahim Cissoko.
