BDF Makes History With First Female Force Sergeant Major

History was made within the Belize Defence Force (BDF) yesterday as Warrant Officer Class One, Dee-Ancor Reyes, became the first woman to assume the appointment of Force Sergeant Major, the highest appointment within the BDF’s enlisted ranks. The change of appointment took place at the Sir Colville Young Parade Square at Price Barracks in Ladyville, during the Passing Out Ceremony for Recruit Intake 69.  Reyes succeeds Warrant Officer Class One Wilfredo Majano, who served as Force Sergeant Major for more than 26 years. The ceremony marked the end of Majano’s lengthy tenure in the post and the beginning of a new chapter for the BDF, with Reyes taking responsibility for an appointment that plays a key role in maintaining discipline, standards and the welfare of enlisted personnel.  Speaking from the podium following the handover, Reyes reflected on the significance of assuming the appointment and the responsibilities that come with the position.

Dee-Ancor Reyes, Incoming Force Sergeant Major, Belize Defence Force: “As the first woman appointed Force Sergeant Major I recognize the historic nature of this occasion. I accept with gratitude while remaining focused on the work ahead. This appointment is ultimately about duty, service, and responsibility to every member of the Belize Defence Force. I know that respect is earned, trust is built through consistency and leadership is demonstrated through action. I will therefore be present, listen carefully, act fearfully and carry out my duties with integrity. Today, I receive the symbol of this office and of my commitment to the Belize Defence Force. May we move forward as one force, disciplined, professional, ready, and united to serve Belize.”

Reyes’ elevation is also being viewed as a milestone for women serving in the BDF, as she becomes the first female soldier to rise to the position of Force Sergeant Major.  The ceremony included remarks from outgoing Force Sergeant Major Majano, Reyes and Prime Minister John Briceño, who also serves as Minister of National Defence and Border Security. The formal proceedings concluded with the traditional march past and review of the parade.  The BDF had extended a special invitation to former female members of the Force to attend the occasion, recognizing the broader significance of Reyes’ appointment for women who have served and continue to serve in Belize’s military.
