BDF Soldier Killed in Motorcycle Crash in Toledo

Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle accident that claimed the life of a Belize Defence Force soldier in Toledo District yesterday afternoon. Thirty-year-old Estevan Cus of Aguacate Village died after the motorcycle he was driving crashed between miles seventy-nine and eighty on the Thomas Vincent Ramos Highway.  The accident occurred at around three-twenty-three near Jacintoville Junction, shortly before the bridge. Assistant Commissioner of Police Stacy Smith provided the preliminary findings of the investigation.

ASP Stacy Smith, Belize Police Department: “Police are investigating a fatal traffic accident which led to the death of 25-year-old Esteban Cus, a Belize Defence Force soldier of Aguacate Village which occurred at around 3:30pm on Thursday, 27 August, 2026. The accident occurred in the vicinity of Hascintoville junction which is located near mile 80 on the Thomas Vincent Ramos Highway in Southern Belize. The investigating officer reported that upon arriving, he observed an injured and unresponsive male person who was subsequently identified as Cus as well as another injured but responsive male person who was learned to be the pillion rider of a motorcycle. Also observed on the scene was a damaged Lifan brand motorcycle. What the investigation has so far indicated is that both Cus and the pillion rider were traveling on board the Lifan brand motorcycle, Cus being the driver, when upon approaching the junction, Mr. Cus allegedly lost control of the motorcycle and collided into the guardrail in that area.”

Police say Cus was travelling from the direction of the Dump area toward Jacintoville Village when he apparently lost control of the motorcycle while negotiating a curve. The motorcycle collided with a guardrail along the highway. Investigators noted that the road was dry and visibility was clear at the time.  Cus sustained serious injuries to his head and arms. He was taken to the Punta Gorda Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His body remains at the hospital morgue awaiting a post-mortem examination.  His passenger, twenty-six-year-old BDF soldier Richie Mes of San Marcos Village, sustained injuries to his head, right leg, arm and rib area. He was transported to the Punta Gorda Community Hospital for treatment./
