BDF Soldier Remanded Over Shooting of Police Officer at Funeral Repast

A Belize Defence Force soldier has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison after being formally charged in connection with the shooting of a police officer during a violent altercation at a funeral repast in Lemonal Village earlier this week. Twenty-seven-year-old Alexander Fredrick Reynolds appeared unrepresented before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court this morning, where he was arraigned on three indictable offenses: attempted murder, dangerous harm, and use of deadly means of harm against Police Constable Pharon Muslar.

Before the charges were read, the Senior Magistrate questioned why Reynolds had his head wrapped in bandages. Reynolds explained that he had sustained chop injuries during the incident. Because the charges involve the alleged use of a firearm, the court had no jurisdiction to consider bail. Reynolds was therefore remanded to the Belize Central Prison until August 19.  The charges stem from an incident shortly after midnight on June twenty-second at the home of John Anthony in Lemonal Village, where family and friends had gathered for the repast of Anthony’s late wife. Police say Constable Muslar had briefly left the gathering to check on his children before returning and sitting beside his common-law wife.  Investigators allege that Reynolds approached Muslar and shoved him, prompting Muslar to push him back. According to police, Reynolds then allegedly pulled a nine-millimeter pistol from his waistband and fired a shot above the officer’s head. Fearing for his life, Muslar drew his service firearm and the two men struggled for control of the weapon. During the struggle, police say Muslar was shot in the left side of the chest.  Authorities further allege that Muslar then drew a machete and struck Reynolds, who, despite his injuries, allegedly fired a second shot that struck the officer in the right shoulder. Muslar reportedly lost consciousness and later awoke at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he received treatment for his injuries.
