BDF Volunteer Killed in Three-Vehicle Highway Crash

A 23-year-old BDF volunteer was killed in a three-vehicle collision on the Thomas Vincent Ramos Highway yesterday afternoon. The incident happened at around two-thirty between Miles Eight and Nine, near Silk Grass Village in the Stann Creek District.  The victim has been identified as Hilberto Elvin Chub of Maya Mopan Village. ASP Stacy Smith explains what police believe led to the collision.

ASP Stacy Smith, Belize Police Department: “Police are investigating a road traffic accident which led to the death of 55 year old Patrick Chun which occurred on 22nd August, 2026 near mile 76 on the George Price Highway. The investigating officer reported that acting upon information at approximately 7:20pm they visited that location where they observed a bus which was parked on the left hand side of the road which showed damage to the driver’s side. On the right hand side of the road was an extensively damaged Meilun motorcycle. What the investigation has so far suggested is that Chun was in the process of overtaking a vehicle when a collision occurred between the bus and a motorcycle resulting in his grave injury and ultimo demise. The bus had been impounded for inspection and a notice of intended prosecution has been served on the driver of the bus. The circumstance of the collision remains under investigation.”

Police say Chub was travelling behind a box truck when his motorcycle was struck from behind by a Ford Explorer driven by 32-year-old Darnell Reggie Castillo of Dangriga. The impact reportedly pushed the motorcycle into the rear of the truck, which was being driven by 44-year-old Hamin Enamorado of Belize City.  Chub was transported to the Southern Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after four o’clock. Castillo is receiving treatment in stable condition under police guard, and a blood specimen was obtained from him.  Both the Ford Explorer and motorcycle have been impounded.
