A beach outing for a group of friends from Malabar, Arima, ended in tragedy on when one of them drowned while playing football at Penzance Bay, Balandra.
Police said the incident occurred around 2:40 pm., when the ball rolled into the sea.
One of the friends, identified as 35-year-old Andrew Curtis Clarke of Ackrabali East, Malabar, swam about 100 feet out in an attempt to retrieve it but got into difficulty.
A coconut picker who witnessed the incident swam out with a rope to assist Clarke, but he disappeared beneath the water and never resurfaced.
Sgt. Keith Castro Leon and PC Maharaj of the Toco Police Station responded to the report and interviewed Clarke’s friends, who said they had warned him not to go after the ball, but he did not listen.
Professional divers from the Balandra district joined the search, but their efforts proved futile.
Sgt. Leon is continuing investigations, and the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard and other agencies have been contacted to assist in locating Clarke’s body.
