Belama Resident Charged in $16,550 Failed Land Deal Matter

A Belama Phase Three resident is behind bars tonight after new allegations of deception were brought against him in connection with a failed land deal.  Thirty-three-year-old Melbourne Wade, a driver and tour guide of Apollo Street, was arraigned this morning in court, where he was read six counts of obtaining money transfer by deception. The charges stem from a report made by forty-four-year-old boat captain Juan Carlos Vasquez.  Vasquez alleges that Wade swindled a total of $16,550 from him under the pretense of selling land and assisting with the transaction. According to the complaint, Vasquez made six separate payments but received neither the land nor the promised assistance.  The individual charges are:

  • Count One: $6,450 allegedly obtained between August 29 and September 24, 2025
  • Count Two: $3,000 allegedly obtained on September 1, 2025
  • Count Three: $1,500 allegedly obtained on September 2, 2025
  • Count Four: $3,000 allegedly obtained on September 3, 2025
  • Count Five: $2,100 allegedly obtained between September 3 and 7, 2025
  • Count Six: $500 allegedly obtained on September 8, 2025

Police prosecutors strongly objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the offenses and noting that similar allegations are already pending before the court.  The presiding Senior Magistrate agreed and denied bail in the first instance, telling Wade he may apply to the High Court if he wishes.  Wade was remanded to the Belize Central Prison and is scheduled to return to court on April 30.
