BELIPO Signs Agreement with WIPO to Modernize IP Dispute Resolution

The Belize Intellectual Property Office (BELIPO) has taken steps to modernize its dispute resolution mechanisms by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The agreement, formalized during the 65th Series of the WIPO Assemblies in Geneva, aims to introduce Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) options, particularly mediation, for intellectual property (IP) and technology-related disputes in Belize.  Under this new collaboration, BELIPO will offer voluntary mediation for parties involved in trademark oppositions, utilizing the established WIPO Mediation Rules through the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center. This initiative recognizes the benefits of ADR, such as its neutrality, flexibility, and specialized expertise, which are well-suited for IP disputes.  The partnership also includes efforts to raise awareness of ADR for IP matters, provide assistance with case administration (including co-administration and training of neutrals), and facilitate the development of model R&D agreements that incorporate ADR options.  BELIPO noted that this was possible through significant help from the Attorney General Anthony Sylvestre which will now enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of IP dispute resolution in Belize.
