Belize Advances $250M MCC Compact for Energy and Education

The port project is being advanced alongside the approximately two-hundred-and-fifty-million-dollar Millennium Challenge Corporation Compact, which will finance significant investments in energy and education.  For education, the Prime Minister reported that a growing number of students and families are now receiving direct Government support.

John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “The education upliftment program now includes 27 high schools covering 20 secondary government schools and seven government-aided schools, benefiting more than 14,000 students. In total, more than 19,000 students or 83% of all secondary school students get either full or partial financial help and over 8,500 families experiencing this relief. At present, 20,000 students get a hot meal each day in 104 schools, 83 primary schools and 21 secondary schools, an investment of $10.4 million annually. A hungry child cannot learn.”
