Belize has assumed a key leadership position within the Central American Integration System, taking over the Pro Tempore Presidency of the Educational and Cultural Coordination of the Central American Integration System, known as CECC/SICA. The transition took place following the conclusion of the 51st Ordinary Meeting of the Council of Ministers of Education and Culture held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where the Dominican Republic formally handed over the presidency to Belize for the next six months. Representing Belize at the high-level meeting was Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology, Ramon Cervantes, who accepted the presidency on behalf of the Government and people of Belize. During his address, Minister Cervantes outlined Belize’s priorities for the regional body, emphasizing the need to ensure that education reaches every learner, strengthen culture as a pillar of national identity and development, and advance digital transformation across the education sector. The minister also highlighted Belize’s growing reputation as a leader in educational innovation, pointing to the country’s digital education initiatives, including the implementation of the 501 Academy platform, as an example of how technology can be used to expand access to learning opportunities. Belize’s delegation also included Chief Education Officer Yolanda Gongora and Director of the Institute for Social and Cultural Research within NICH, Rolando Cocom, both of whom participated in discussions aimed at strengthening regional cooperation in education and culture. As Pro Tempore President, Belize will now be responsible for leading and coordinating the implementation of decisions and agreements adopted by the Council of Ministers. The role places Belize at the forefront of regional efforts to improve educational quality, promote cultural development, encourage innovation and strengthen collaboration among member states.
