Belize Athletics Association Launches First-Ever Summer Camp for Young Athletes

For the first time, the Belize Athletics Association is hosting a week-long Summer Camp aimed at introducing children to the fundamentals of athletics in a fun and active environment. The Belize Athletics Association is the national body responsible for promoting and developing athletics in Belize, including disciplines such as track and field. Through its programmes, the association works to encourage young athletes and create opportunities for them to develop their skills in sport. The camp is being held at Charlie Burton Park in Belize City and runs from 9:00 to 11:00 each morning throughout the week. Young participants from ages four to fourteen are learning the basic skills of running, jumping and throwing through fun, age-appropriate activities that help build confidence, improve coordination and encourage teamwork. National Kids Athletics Coach and Belize Athletics Association coach, Shelmadine Carr, says the camp is designed to introduce more children to athletics, encourage healthy lifestyles and identify young talent that can be developed in the future, while giving them the opportunity to learn the sport and have fun during their summer vacation.

The week-long camp is also being supported by a team of volunteers who are assisting with activities and helping to create a positive learning environment for the young participants. Volunteer Gianni Jones shares his experience working with the children and being part of the initiative.

The Belize Athletics Association hopes the success of its first Summer Camp will encourage more children to get involved in athletics and inspire the continuation of programmes that promote youth development through sports.
