Today, Belize joined countries around the world in observing the International Day for Women in Maritime, a global initiative recognizing the achievements and growing contributions of women within the maritime industry. Locally, the occasion was marked with the SHE@SEA Summit hosted jointly by the Women in Maritime Association Caribbean, WIMAC Belize Chapter, and the Belize Port Authority at the Old Belize Jungle Pavilion. Director and President of WIMAC Belize, Jaeda Sutherland, noted that maritime careers have traditionally been viewed as male-dominated, but says that perception is steadily changing as more women continue entering and excelling in the field.
Also addressing the summit was Ports Commissioner Kylon Young, who emphasized the critical role women play in strengthening Belize’s maritime sector. Young also highlighted the importance of the maritime industry to Belize’s economy, particularly in areas connected to shipping, trade, tourism, and national development.
Held under the theme, “From Policy to Practice: Advancing Gender Equality for Maritime Excellence”, the summit brought together maritime professionals, students, industry stakeholders, and government representatives for discussions focused on leadership, inclusion, and expanding opportunities for women within the sector./
