Belize City Council Launches Cashless E-Bus Ridership Card

If you’re among the thousands of passengers who use the E-bus system operated by the Belize City Council, you now have the option of going cashless when you ride. Today, the council launched its new Launch of Belize Public Transport Ridership Card. The new system will allow passengers to pay for their ride with just a tap of the card, rather than having to provide cash and, in some instances, wait for change. The initiative is a collaborative effort between the council and Digi Wallet. Minister of Transport, Dr. Louis Zabaneh, said that the new system is part of a pilot project aimed at modernizing the transport sector. Mayor Bernard Wagner also noted that the rollout will increase efficiency in public transportation.

Monique Ford-Vicente, Marketing Manager for Digi Wallet, explained how the system works and where commuters can get their new cards.

The card system can be linked to a Digi Wallet account, allowing cardholders to check their balance electronically. Funds added to the cards do not expire. The cashless payment system is part of a larger pilot project to modernize the transport sector, funded by the European Union in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
