Belize City Council Launches Climate Resilience Planning Initiative

The Belize City Council is working with various partner organizations to develop a set of plans that will improve the municipality’s ability to handle natural disasters and the effects of climate change. This morning, the Council launched the Making Cities Resilient 2030 initiative, a two-day event that will see organizations at various levels within the national disaster response framework contribute to the plan’s development. These partners include organizations such as the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction UNDRR and the Joint SDG Fund. Mayor Bernard Wagner says, that as a coastal city, such plans are critical for Belize City for disaster preparedness and response.

Daniel Mendez, National Emergency Coordinator for NEMO, says that collaboration is essential to the development of these plans because disasters are a national concern.

Over the next two days, participants will engage in discussions that include setting priority areas for action planning and using relevant diagnosis and assessment tools for these plans.
