Belize City Deputy Mayor Eluide Miller Hints at Possible Mayoral Run Ahead of 2027 Elections

With Belize’s next municipal elections roughly a year away, Belize City Deputy Mayor Eluide Miller has hinted at the possibility that he may one day seek the mayoral seat.  The 29-year-old politician says that while he has not made any formal decision, the idea of running for mayor has crossed his mind. Miller noted that many of his friends, family members, and supporters have been encouraging him to consider the move as the next step in his political journey.  In an interview, however, Miller told Love News that today is not that day such a decision will be made.

Elluide Miller, Deputy Mayor: “I will be completely honest with you. It has happened to me on multiple occasions throughout my life, where, and I’m pretty certain it might happen to you as well, where people from the outside see things for you before you see for yourself. It happened to me back in 2024. There were many people asking me to run for council long before I wanted to do it on my own or before I agreed to enter the political arena. And it’s the same with this conversation. It was mentioned by some of my colleagues today, right? That they feel that at this time, I would be the best person to take up that mantle. And there are parts of me that also feel that as well, right? But I am telling you that I want to respect the process. And I feel that when it is the appropriate time for me to take that step and to come out and say that, yes, I will be participating in the next election, then I will do so. But as you have highlighted to, thought has crossed my mind and as I shared to you earlier I think that when it is the appropriate time, then I will be ready for it.”

Miller’s career at City Hall spans roughly seven years. He began as an intern at the Belize City Council and steadily worked his way through the ranks, gaining experience in municipal administration before eventually contesting and winning a seat through the municipal election process.  While Miller stopped short of officially announcing any mayoral candidacy, tonight we can confirm that he will continue serving in a key leadership role at City Hall for the coming year.  With a unanimous vote of the Belize City Council, Miller has been re-elected as Deputy Mayor of Belize City for the 2026–2027 term. The decision ensures that he will remain in the post as the council continues its work leading up to the March 2027 municipal elections.  Reflecting on his first year serving as Deputy Mayor, Miller said the experience has been both challenging and rewarding, allowing him to better understand the needs of Belize City residents and the responsibilities of municipal leadership. He added that the year ahead will focus on continuing the council’s development initiatives and strengthening engagement with communities across the city.

Elluide Miller, Deputy Mayor: “I think it’s quite the statement to be the youngest council member on this team and to be entrusted with this great level of responsibility. I feel that I have served as kind of the glue, right, that keeps the team together, keep everyone engaged. And that only comes through a great deal of effort, right, on my part. And I am only able to achieve that with the confidence that my colleagues have in me. And of course, with the confidence that the mayor has always have me. On a daily basis, I have tens of people, organizations calling me. I think that I am now known as someone who is able to deliver, right? And someone who is accessible. And I pride myself in both those things, in remaining accessible and on delivering, right? On what it is that we promise the residents of this city that we would deliver on. And so I’m extremely proud of the outcome today. And I think that it is only through the hard work and dedication and my commitment to service over the years that I have been able to earn the respect of my colleagues. They did not only express their support today by way of vote, right, but also their confidence in my continued leadership. My focus over the next year and the focus of our entire team is really on delivering those commitments that we made to the residents of the city leading up to the 2024 elections. And so we are completely committed to that. And I’m very excited about some of the stuff that we have in the pipeline. Yeah, it was a unanimous vote. I earned the support of absolutely all my colleagues. And I think for me that really tells me that consistency matters, right? It’s about showing up every day, doing the work and maintaining mutual respect, right, for my colleagues and for the institution that we all serve. I think over the past year, I’ve really demonstrated a great deal of commitment and I’m grateful that all of my colleagues recognized that.”

Miller’s re-election signals strong confidence from his fellow councillors and places him among the emerging political figures to watch in the political circles.
