Belize City earns global medals for climate action progress

The Belize City Council has been recognized for its efforts in climate action by the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM). The city received two “medals” for its progress in the 2024 cycle.  Belize City was recognized for its achievements in two key areas: Mitigation: The city received a medal for completing the “Inventory” phase of its mitigation efforts, which involves creating a baseline of greenhouse gas emissions.  The city was awarded a medal for the “Assessment” phase, which is a new recognition category, for its work in evaluating climate risks and vulnerabilities.  The GCoM is a global alliance of over 13,300 local governments committed to combating climate change. The GCoM LATAM, which represents Latin America and the Caribbean, is funded by the European Union and Bloomberg Philanthropies.  In a letter to Mayor Bernard Wagner, the GCoM LATAM Helpdesk congratulated the city for its commitment to a “more sustainable and resilient future.” The letter states that Belize City’s participation connects it to a global alliance making a significant contribution to addressing climate change and promoting a positive collective impact. The recognition is based on the GCoM’s Common Reporting Framework, which guides cities’ climate trajectories and tracks progress at each stage.
