Belize City Man Fatally Shot Near Dean Street; Police Probe Ongoing

Police are investigating the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Jahmy (JAH-MY) Belgrave, which occurred this evening near the intersection of Dean Street and East Collet Canal in Belize City.  According to police reports, just after four o’clock, officers received information that a male person had been shot and transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH). Personnel from the Crimes Investigation Branch responded to the hospital’s Emergency Room, where they observed Belgrave suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his body. He was pronounced dead at 4:17 p.m., reportedly en route to the hospital.  Initial investigations reveal that Belgrave was at a residence on East Canal visiting his children. Police say that as he left the location, an unknown male opened fire, shooting at him multiple times before fleeing the area.  The shooting scene was processed by Scenes of Crime with blood swabs and bullet fragments recovered. Police reported that no expended shell casings were found at the location. The matter remains under active investigation as officers canvass for witnesses and review any available surveillance footage from nearby businesses and homes.  Belgrave is a recognizable name in police and news records, having appeared in past coverage for several encounters with law enforcement. His previous run-ins include charges for drug possession, firearm-related offenses, and public disorder matters. In August 2015, he was charged with the robbery of a restaurant, and in 2023 he faced charges linked to gang affiliation.  The killing continues a troubling period of loss for the Belgrave family. Jahmy’s father, Alwin Belgrave, passed away in January of this year, while his uncle, Raymond Belgrave, was killed in a road traffic accident in May in northern Belize.  Police say investigations into Belgrave’s murder are ongoing, and anyone with information related to the incident is urged to contact authorities.//////
