Belize City Man Fined $1,500 for Assault After Motorcycle Collision

A Belize City man has been fined more than fifteen hundred dollars after admitting that he assaulted another motorcyclist following a traffic collision.  Twenty-two-year-old Keiron Garbutt appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, where he pleaded guilty to one count of harm against forty-six-year-old Marvin Edwards.  The charge arose from an incident on July 30 at the intersection of George and Bishop Streets. Edwards told police that a motorcycle driven by Garbutt collided with his motorcycle. When he questioned Garbutt about the incident, Garbutt reportedly punched him in the face and later threatened him with a pocketknife.  Police officers in the area were alerted, and both men were taken to the Precinct One Police Station. Edwards was issued medico-legal forms, while Garbutt was detained and later charged.  In court, Garbutt told the magistrate that Edwards had crashed into him. He nevertheless admitted causing harm and accepted responsibility for his actions.  Garbutt was fined one thousand five hundred dollars, along with five dollars in court costs. He has until November 30 to pay or face five months in prison.  Neither man was charged in connection with the traffic collision.
