A Belize City resident has been fined after admitting responsibility for more than a pound of marijuana discovered during a police search. Nineteen-year-old Kamron Thomas, an unemployed resident of Barbara Harris Street, pleaded guilty to possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply when he appeared before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison. Thomas had been jointly charged with Angelique Annette Mejia, a warehouse attendant of the Cet Site area, and construction worker Ralston McDonald. Police say that on Saturday, February 14, officers on mobile patrol observed suspicious activity at a two-storey residence on Jennifer Smith Street. After identifying themselves and conducting a search, officers found a black suitcase under a bed containing multiple plastic bags of suspected cannabis. The substance later weighed 1.30 pounds. In court, Thomas accepted responsibility, telling the Magistrate the marijuana belonged to him. Because it was his first offense, the court opted not to impose the mandatory minimum fine of ten thousand dollars. Instead, Thomas was fined $4,005, which he must pay by September 30. If he defaults, he will serve one year in prison.
