As the New Year approaches, the Belize City Council is reminding property owners to take responsibility for their lands, warning that neglected and abandoned lots could eventually be reclaimed through legal processes if left unattended. The Council says there are more than 2,000 abandoned properties across the city, many of which have become safety concerns for surrounding neighborhoods due to overgrowth, dumping, and criminal activity. While several properties have since been auctioned this year, Mayor Bernard Wagner says they are looking at converting several of these lots into parks and useful spaces for the city.
Mayor Wagner noted that any transfer of ownership or auction must follow due legal process through the courts which the Council has already launched in several cases. The mayor outlined reasons many properties remain neglected or unclaimed, including unresolved inheritance matters, owners living abroad, lack of updated documentation, and financial hardship that prevents upkeep or tax payments.
Property owners are urged to update records, clear overgrown lots, settle outstanding taxes, and formally manage their holdings before legal recovery proceedings are initiated. The mayor’s comments were taken from a morning show appearance on November 17, which Love News is now referencing as part of continuing coverage on the city’s abandoned properties issue.
