Belize Commemorates World Post Day Under Theme “Local Service, Global Reach”

“Local Service, Global Reach” was this year’s theme for World Post Day, held yesterday. It is a day to commemorate the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union, which started in 1874 in Switzerland and was later officially established in 1969 at the Universal Postal Congress in Tokyo.

The postal industry is one of the largest and most far-reaching service infrastructures in the world, with over six hundred thousand post offices and 4.6 million postal workers under the 192 member states of the Universal Postal Union.

We spoke with Belize’s first woman Postmaster General, Marsha Price who told us how postal services in Belize is changing.

Dr. Marsha Price, Postmaster General:The theme is to have more local service. Recently, I  think it’s just over two weeks, that we launched our first ever postal shop. So now we have this postal shop available in five district locations: Belize City, San Pedro, San Ignacio, Placencia, and Caye Caulker. Customers can go into those offices and find these services: you’ll find caps, T-shirts, dry fits, postcards. We have first postcards for the first time that are designed just for the post office so now you can get your postal cards. What’s coming next is to have these items, these merchandise available on our website so that people can access worldwide.  We also want to do more collaboration with entrepreneurs to have their items available within our post shops. Also, we have coming soon is collaboration with the Universal Postal Union whereby there is the JEYA project which caters to women entrepreneur. So particularly within the remote areas, we will be meeting with you and see how we can collab to have your service more available to be the connection between those entrepreneurs and their customers. So that is what we are working on.”

At World Post Day, which highlighted new e-commerce opportunities, Postmaster Price told entrepreneurs how to use the postal service as a first point of contact for delivering their products.

Dr. Marsha Price, Postmaster General: We are working with the Universal Coastal Union and an e-commerce platform whereby it creates a marketplace for entrepreneurs and to see how we can get their products to be sold both globally, internationally and locally. So that is one of the next projects that we are working on that all aligns with posts for people because we are here for the people. We want to see how we can get your products into the homes of your customers so that we can be that first point of contact for you, our customers.”

The Belize Post office has been around since January 7th, 1830.
