The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade has issued a statement condemning what it described as continued military intimidation by the People’s Republic of China against the Republic of China (Taiwan), warning that such actions undermine peace, stability, and dialogue across the Taiwan Strait. In its statement, Belize reaffirmed its long-standing support for Taiwan and emphasized the importance of resolving differences peacefully and in accordance with international law, while urging restraint and dialogue as regional tensions persist. That position was reiterated publicly in the House of Representatives on June 27, when John Briceño underscored Belize’s enduring friendship and diplomatic support for Taiwan during a House meeting. The Prime Minister highlighted the strength of the bilateral relationship and Belize’s commitment to standing with Taiwan on matters of principle and international engagement.

John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “Belize and Taiwan have continuously supported and helped each other and closely cooperated in areas of mutual interest. And whereas our bilateral cooperation project between Belize and Taiwan, including hospital and road construction, renovation of the National Assembly building, urban resilience and disaster of prevention, metabolic chronic disease prevention, women’s empowerment, Mandarin teaching, and scholarship programs are currently proceeding smoothly. And whereas with Taiwan’s assistance, 50 starter homes were completed and handed over in May 2025, and shrimp from Belize was soon be exported to Taiwan, showcasing the strength and depth of the multifaceted partnership between the two nations. Taiwan is not only a faithful ally and development partner of Belize but also an active contributor to addressing pressing global challenges, making it an indispensable member of the global community. And whereas the People’s Republic of China, PRC, has deliberately misused the UNGA resolution 2758 to assert false claims of sovereignty over Taiwan, to isolate Taiwan from the international community, and obstruct Taiwan’s participation in the UN system and other multilateral fora which stand to benefit greatly from Belize’s expertise and experiences. And whereas Belize, as a steadfast ally stands shoulder to shoulder with Taiwan in safeguarding its sovereignty, democracy, freedom, and the right to self-determination of the Taiwanese people when Taiwan faces the ever-growing military, political, and economic coercion and hegemonic threats from the PRC. Now therefore be it resolved that this honorable House extends its commitment to the strong and healthy diplomatic bond between Belize and Taiwan.”
The June 27 House resolution is not unprecedented. In September 2024, the House of Representatives passed a motion commemorating the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Belize and Taiwan, celebrating their strong partnership, shared democratic values, and Belize’s consistent support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. Earlier, in May 2022, the House also approved a motion supporting Taiwan’s inclusion in international bodies such as the United Nations and the World Health Assembly, reinforcing Belize’s long-standing advocacy on the global stage. That support was again demonstrated in April 2023, when Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen addressed Belize’s National Assembly during an official visit. On that occasion, she received a formal resolution backing democratic Taiwan, and Belizean leaders publicly reaffirmed their appreciation for Taiwan’s contributions to national development, including assistance in infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, and education. Belize remains one of a small group of countries that maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, a partnership spanning decades. While China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has increased military activity near the island in recent years, Belize has continued to maintain a consistent foreign policy rooted in peaceful dialogue, respect for international law, and loyalty to long-standing diplomatic friendships. Despite repeated objections from China, which argues that international support for Taiwan interferes in its internal affairs, Belize has continued to voice its position openly at home and abroad, signaling continuity in its diplomatic stance amid heightened global attention on cross-strait relations.
