Belize Condemns Escalating Violence Against Palestinians in West Bank

The Government of Belize has expressed concern over escalating violence against Palestinian civilians in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem.  In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade said the violence has resulted in deaths on both sides and led to further attacks by Israeli settlers against neighbouring Palestinian communities.  The Ministry says Israel, as the occupying power, has a responsibility under international humanitarian law to protect the Palestinian population, including from settler violence. Belize is calling on the Israeli Government to prevent further attacks, investigate the incidents and hold those responsible accountable.  Belize is also urging Israel to avoid measures that collectively punish Palestinian civilians.  The government reaffirmed its position that the Israeli occupation and settlements in Palestinian territory are unlawful and must end, in keeping with the July 2024 advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice.  Belize continues to support a two-state solution involving a sovereign and viable Palestinian state existing alongside Israel in peace and security. It is also calling for the protection of civilians in both Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory and for a resolution based on international law, justice and mutual security.
