Belize Credit Union League Celebrates 77 Years on International Credit Union Day

Belize marks International Credit Union Day…against that backdrop, the Belize Credit Union League is celebrating its 77th year of service to the Belizean populace. Jacqueline Taibo, Monitoring and Compliance Officer of the Belize Credit Union League, reflects on the Union’s history and service.

Jacqueline Taibo, Compliance Officer: “We have eight credit unions throughout the country of Belize, over 160,000 members with over $1 billion in assets and so today credit unions take an opportunity to celebrate their achievements, show appreciation to their members, and just look back on history. Credit unions have been operating in Belize for over 70 years, as long as we have been celebrating credit union day, which is, this is the 77th year of celebration, and the credit unions are a good, they are stable financial institution, and so it’s a good place for Belizeans to have their savings.”

This year’s International Credit Union Day is being celebrated under the theme: “Cooperation for a Prosperous World.” The Belize Credit Union League is set to host its staff and executives for a weekend of continued training and support. Taibo tells us more.

Jacqueline Taibo, Compliance Officer: “So this year, we are looking at cooperation within the organization. And so we’re going to have Dr. Dionne Chamberlain discussing diversity within the workplace. Where there is diversity, there is success. And where there is exclusion, it erodes the stability of an institution. We’re also going to be having Mrs. Corrine Fuller-Robinson, and she is going to be discussing cooperation within society and so that means that we’re looking at bridging the gap where the underserved will be able to point out opportunities for them to be part of the financial system. We’re having Anne-Marie Williams, and she is going to be doing cooperation across society. And she’ll be looking at ways of bridging the gap for the underserved population. We have people who find it difficult to get loans or to even have an account at a bank or a financial institution. We’re also having Mrs. Corrine Fuller. And she’s going to be doing cooperation across the international border. And so we belong to the World Organization of Credit Unions, we belong to the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions and so in that way, globally, we share information about best practices. We do training development and we take advantage of opportunities for digital transformation within the credit union. And so we’ll end the day featuring a health segment with the Kidney Association of Belize and Dr. Gongora, as well as an award ceremony for the credit unions and a cocktail at the end of the evening event.”

Additional partners and agencies will also be participating in the Convention scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 18, at the Caribbean Motors showroom in Belize City.
