Belize Customs Tightens Vehicle Import Checks With New Verification Rules

The Belize Customs & Excise Department has introduced new verification procedures for imported vehicles, effective immediately, to combat fraud and ensure transparency. Under the new rules, all vehicles five years old or newer must undergo mandatory verification through a Joint Intelligence Coordination Center (JICC) Motor Vehicle Verification Form, which must be submitted directly to INTERPOL Belize. Vehicles purchased from established online auctions or dealerships may be released once the form is submitted, while those acquired through private sales or from unverified sellers will face delays. Customs declarations and duty payments will not be processed until INTERPOL confirms the vehicle’s legitimacy. Controller of Customs Estella Leslie emphasized that these measures are essential to prevent fraudulent imports and uphold international standards. The department has instructed all officers to enforce the rules without exception and thanked the public for their cooperation during the transition period. Importers with questions are encouraged to contact the Belize Customs & Excise Department for further clarification.
