Belize Diaspora Initiative Provides Uniforms for 147 Students

An initiative that took shape during Belize Day in Miramar last month is now benefiting students here in Belize. Belize Day on July 11 brought together members of the Belizean diaspora in the Florida area who supported the initiative through a raffle.  The initiative was spearheaded by BRIDGE 501 through the Miramar-Belize Sister City partnership. The campaign set out to provide uniforms for students at the school, with a sponsorship goal of 25 dollars per student. Today, that initiative reached the students it was intended to support. Through the partnership with Belize City Council and DIBARY, all 147 students received two pairs of school uniforms each. Councillor Kaya Cattouse says the effort demonstrates how the sister-city relationship can translate into tangible support for students here at home.

And while the initiative began with connections made in Miramar, its impact is being felt directly at Stella Maris, where students are now receiving the uniforms. Principal Doreth Pascasio says the school appreciates the support and what it means for the students and their families.

A ceremonial cheque of seven thousand five hundred dollars was handed over today at City Hall for the acquisition of the uniforms.
