Belize District Emerges as Team to Beat at Super Nationals

The country’s top high school athletes are now halfway through the inaugural Super Nationals, with three days of competition already in the books. Following last week’s successful primary school division, this week’s games have raised the level of competition as secondary schools from across Belize continue battling for district pride. As the tournament reaches its midway point, Belize District has emerged as the one to beat in two of the marquee team sports. With medals and championship hopes on the line, the action has remained intense throughout the week as athletes compete across multiple disciplines. In volleyball, Belize District has established itself as the early front-runner, producing strong performances in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions. The district has remained unbeaten through several matches, putting itself in a favorable position heading into the final rounds of competition. Councilor Kaya Cattouse says the level of competition has been high, but Belize District has consistently risen to the challenge.

Shaquille Rice, Sports Coordinator: “We’ve had so far competitive games amongst Belize, Cayo, Orange Walk, Toledo, Stann Creek and Corozal. They’ve all been exciting, exciting games. Me personally, it’s been exciting. It’s been an eye-opener as well because as an employee of the National Sports Council we don’t really partake in high school events.”

On the basketball court, the story has been much the same. Belize District has continued its dominant run, displaying depth on both ends of the floor and collecting important wins to stay atop the standings. While the competition has produced several closely contested games, Belize District has consistently found ways to come out on top, reinforcing its status as one of the tournament’s strongest contenders. Shaquille Rice, a sports coordinator says Belize District’s consistency has been the difference so far.
